Alexander the Great statue

Alexander the Great was born in 356 B.C to King Phillip II and Queen Olympus. Alexander the Great became the king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia at just 20 years old. He established the largest Greek empire that the ancient world had ever seen. He was known as Alexander the Great because he over threw the Persian empire and laid the foundations for the Hellenistic world. Alexander the Great was always depicted as a clean shaven guy in portraits, which was different from previous Greek portraits of statesman and rulers that were shown with beards. Portraits of almost all of the Hellenistic kings and Roman emperors until Hadrian were shown beardless.  This portrait of Alexander the Great is made from marble. It was made in the second to first B.C.E. It is 37 centimeters high and can be found in the Trustees of the British Museum. It was made during the Hellenistic period.   This piece of art was a fighting scene that was painted on a box from the tomb of Tutankhamen, also known as King Tut. Tutankhamen was an Egyptian pharaoh who ruled Egypt during the end of the 18th century. This piece of art in King Tut's tomb was not ever meant to be seen just like the rest of the art that was buried with him. It is in such pristine condition because it was not exposed to the outside elements so you can clearly see the picture and what it represents. The piece is showing people fighting in one of the many battles during King Tut's rule. This scene was ordered in parallel lines known as registers. Registers were used to separate scenes and provide ground lines for the figures. Most of the time fighting scenes would not include ground lines for the foreign armies. Registers were also used to give information about the scenes. For instance, the higher up in the scene, the higher the status.
